매티스 장군, 트럼프 강도높게 비판하다

지금까지 줄곧 침묵을 지켰던 매티스 장군이 드디어 입을 열었네요. 그는 다음과 같이 글을 썼습니다. 도널트 트럼프 이름을 직접 거론하면서, 그가 정말 최악의 대통령이라는 점을 분명히 하면서, 미국 시민들의 행동을 촉구했습니다. 

 

"I have watched this week’s unfolding events, angry and appalled,” 

최근 일주간의 사건을 지켜보니, 나는 분노와 충격을 금할 수 없다 

 

 “The words ‘Equal Justice Under Law’ are carved in the pediment of the United States Supreme Court. This is precisely what protesters are rightly demanding. It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind. We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. 

"법 앞에서의 평등"은 미국최고재판소 지붕에 새겨져있는 말이다. 시위대가 요구하는 것은 바로 이것이다. 이는 포괄적이고 통합적인 요구이다. 우리 모두가 지지할 수 있는 그런 요구 말이다. 몇몇 소수의 범법자들로 인해 우리의 주의가 분산되어서는 안 될 것이다. 

 

The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation.” 

우리가 믿는 가치를 위해 목소리를 내야 한다고 생각하는 수만 명의 사람들이 이번 시위를 규정한다. 사람으로서, 그리고 국민으로서 믿는 가치들 말이다. 

 

 “We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution.”

Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict—a false conflict—between the military and civilian society. It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part. Keeping public order rests with civilian state and local leaders who best understand their communities and are answerable to them.

"워싱턴DC에서처럼 우리의 대응을 군사화하는 것은 민간사회와 군인 간의 갈등 - 거짓 갈등 - 을 유발한다. 제복입은 사람들과 이들이 보호해야할 사람들 간의 신뢰를 훼손한다. 치안을 유지하는 것은 지역사회를 잘 이해하고 있는 민간 정부와 현지 지도자들의 책무이다. 

 

Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.

내 생애에 도널드 트럼프처럼 국민을 단결시키지 않는 대통령은 처음 본다. 그는 노력조차 하지 않는다. 그는 오히려 우리를 분열시키려고 한다. 우리는 지난 3년간 이와 같은 의도적인 행위를 목격하였다. 우리는 지난 3년 간 성숙한 리더십의 부재를 목도했다. 그 없이도 우리는 단결할 수 있다. 우리 민간사회의 내재적인 강점을 통해서 말이다. 지난 며칠 동안 볼 수 있었듯이 이는 쉽지 않을 것이다. 하지만 이는 우리 동료 시민들에 대한 책무이며, 지난 과거 우리의 가치를 지키고자 피를 흘렸던 이전 세대들에 대한 책무이며, 또 우리 자녀들을 위한 책무이기도 하다.
